“Where was this Gianluca Scamacca when he was on the books at West Ham?”
Jim Proudfoot’s question on commentary for talkSPORT was no doubt one that many West Ham fans would’ve been asking amid Scamacca’s fine first half during Italy’s clash against England.
The striker spent one season at the Hammers and scored just eight goals in 27 appearances in east London, but was on target at Wembley Stadium as he gave the Azzurri the lead.
Scamacca signed for Atalanta in the summer and has since netted twice for the Serie A outfit, taking his club form into Italy duty.
After 15 minutes of their Euro 2024 qualifier against England, live on talkSPORT, the unmarked 24-year-old struck past Jordan Pickford.
The goal capped off a fine move for the visitors, and nearly added a second but his left-footed strike whistled just past Pickford’s post. And West Ham fans were quick to react to their ex-forward on social media.
Taking to X, one said: “That Scamacca fella looks a decent striker. Perhaps West Ham should look at him…….oh, wait!?”
“Scamacca was inevitable,” added a second with a laughing emoji.
A third simply replied to the West Ham X account and asked: “Why did you let Scamacca leave?”
However, a fourth didn’t seem too bothered: “Scamacca scoring? Yeah, I don’t care to be honest.”
Unfortunately for Italy, their lead lasted just 17 minutes as Harry Kane equalised for England with a penalty – Kane’s 60th for his country.
Jude Bellingham was brought down inside the area and the Three Lion’s all-time record scorer made no mistake from the spot.
