As you’d expect, it was the perfect opportunity to reshare a classic from April 2011 when the two were playing at Old Trafford together.

In the resurfaced Tweet, Rooney posted: “Hi Rio, do you want picking up in the morning pal”.

Sharing the post, Ferdinand simply wrote: “Happy Birthday Wazza” with a crying laughing face and a heart emoji.

Ferdinand and Rooney are close friends both on and off the pitch having spent 10 years playing together at Manchester United.

In that time the duo won five Premier League titles, two EFL Cups and a Champions League at Old Trafford.

They also shared the pitch with England for several years, with both players a part of the so-called ‘golden generation’ of the noughties.

Since then, Ferdinand has enjoyed a successful career in punditry, while Rooney is with Championship side Birmingham City after managerial spells with Derby County and DC United.

However his first match with the Blues ended in disappointment, with Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough earning a 1-0 win.
